Portfolio website tools in 2026: an honest comparison

Every list of portfolio builders says the same thing and hides the one question that matters later: can you leave? This comparison is organised around who each tool fits, what it costs, how it handles Instagram, and what happens when you want out.

Pick by who you are

  • You already pay for Creative Cloud: Adobe Portfolio is free to start, but read what happens when you want to leave.
  • You want beautiful templates and to sell: Squarespace.
  • You are an illustrator or experimental artist: Cargo, or a gallery built from your Instagram.
  • You are a photographer: Format for Lightroom workflows, Pixpa for client galleries and sales.
  • You write case studies: Copyfolio, or a site you own so every case study can be as long as it needs.
  • You never want to be locked in again: own your site as plain files, with your own domain.

What changed by 2026

Instagram became harder to connect

Meta closed the Instagram Basic Display API in December 2024. Since then most builders only embed a feed widget, which shows your posts but does not turn them into portfolio pages. If your work is posted on Instagram first, check whether a tool truly imports it or only displays it.

Owning your site stopped needing a developer

AI tools such as Claude Code and Codex can now build and change a real site with you. That changes the old trade: templates were the price of not writing code. Today you can have a site in plain files, on hosting in your own name, and change anything by describing it in plain words.

Promtfolio starts from the portfolio you already published, so nothing is rebuilt by hand. In one measured run, a 28 project site came back in about two minutes.

Pick a tool you can leave

A portfolio is years of work, and it should be free to move with you. The best tool for it is one you can walk away from with everything: the pages, the images, the domain. Before you choose, ask what you would take with you if you left tomorrow.

Five questions to ask any portfolio tool

  1. Can I use my own domain, and keep it if I leave?
  2. Can I export the site, or only the content?
  3. What happens to the site the day I stop paying?
  4. Does it build pages from my Instagram, or only embed a feed?
  5. How long can a case study be before the template fights me?

Questions people ask

What is the best portfolio website builder in 2026?

There is no single best one. Squarespace suits polished templates and selling, Cargo suits experimental artists and illustrators, Format and Pixpa suit photographers, Adobe Portfolio suits people already paying for Creative Cloud, and owning your site as plain files suits anyone who never wants to be locked in.

What is the best portfolio website for illustrators?

Illustrators usually need a clean gallery, their own domain, and a way to keep up with work that is posted on Instagram first. Cargo and Squarespace are common choices. If most of your work is already on Instagram, a tool that imports your feed saves the most time.

Can I turn my Instagram into a portfolio website?

Yes. Most builders only embed an Instagram feed, which shows posts but does not build pages from them. Tools like MyGrid import posts once. Promtfolio imports the data export Instagram gives you, groups your posts into pieces named from your captions, lets you hide what you do not want, and builds a site from them.

Which portfolio builders let me export my site?

Almost none of the hosted builders export working code. If leaving later matters to you, choose a site you own as plain files, or at least use your own domain so you can point it elsewhere.

Do I need a subscription for a portfolio website?

Not necessarily. Hosted builders charge monthly. A site you own as plain files needs no subscription. Hosting costs $0, and the only yearly cost there can be is a domain of your own, which is optional.

What sites do professionals use for their portfolio these days?

There is no reliable count, and people who ask this name many different tools. A more useful question is what happens to the site when you stop paying. Adobe Portfolio goes offline 14 days after the plan ends, a Wix site drops to a free address with Wix ads, and an expired Squarespace site shows visitors a "Website Expired" message. A site you hold as files stays online for as long as its host does, and can move to another host.

To build a portfolio website by vibe coding, should I buy Claude Pro, Cursor Pro or Figma Pro?

One AI tool is enough; you do not need all three. Anthropic lists Claude Code as included in Claude's paid plans, and OpenAI lists Codex as included in ChatGPT plans; each company's pricing page has the current prices. A site downloaded from Promtfolio is set up for either Claude Code or Codex, so a Cursor or Figma plan is not required to work on it. If you have not used Claude Code or Codex before, expect some setup before your first change: installing the app and signing in. That is setup, not code. The Start Here file in your download and the Learning Center take you through it step by step. If you already work with one of them, open the folder and start.

Is there any way to access or edit the HTML or CSS in Adobe Portfolio?

Not in any way Adobe documents. Adobe describes Portfolio as a builder for making a site "without writing code," and its help center has no code editor. The two places that accept code are custom meta tags, in Settings, and the Embed module, which takes iframe embed codes. Everything else is styled through themes and design settings.

Does Adobe Portfolio have a storage limit?

Adobe's help center states no total storage limit for a site. The limits it does state are per file, per page and per account: an image up to 50 MB, a video up to 1 GB and an audio file up to 20 MB; up to 500 images on one page; and up to five sites on one account.

Can Adobe Portfolio host video?

Yes. You can upload a video file of up to 1 GB, and Adobe makes versions of it of up to 720p. Uploaded videos never display at full width, so for full width playback Adobe recommends embedding them from YouTube or Vimeo.
