  1. Unzip the download

    Find the file that ends in -promtfolio.zip, usually in Downloads.

    Windows
    Right click it, choose Extract All, and follow the steps.
    Mac
    Double click it.

    You get a folder with the same name. That folder is your site.

    On Windows, a double click only shows what is inside the ZIP. Extract it, so your AI tool gets a real folder to work in.

    Move the folder somewhere you will find it again. Documents is a good place.

Working on your site

  • Lost? Say what's next. On the first day and on every return. Your AI tool reads the folder and offers the one step that moves you furthest, never a list of five.
  • One change per message. Say what, where, and how it should look: "On the home page, make the project titles larger."
  • Show, do not describe. Drag a screenshot or an image into the message box.
  • Look after every change. Ask "show me the page" and check it before you ask for the next thing. Claude can open your pages in a pane next to the conversation.
  • Changed your mind? Say so. "Put it back the way it was" is a fine message. And keep the ZIP you downloaded: it is your untouched copy (Keep a copy).
  • Stop anytime. The stop button interrupts Claude at once. You can also type a correction while it works.
  • New task, new session. A long conversation uses up your plan faster. Start a fresh session when you move on. Your files stay as they are.
  • Reached a limit? Nothing is lost. On the Pro plan the session limit resets every five hours, and there is a weekly limit too. Come back and carry on.

When it looks right, put it online

Put your site online 1:15

Your site is a folder of plain files, and two hosts serve it on a free plan: Netlify and Cloudflare Pages. On both you drag the folder into a page in your browser. Nothing to install, nothing to type. Hosting costs $0, and the only yearly cost there can be is a domain of your own, which is optional.

Netlify
Make a free account, then drag the folder onto app.netlify.com/drop in your browser. Your address ends in netlify.app.
Cloudflare Pages
Make a free account, then create a project in Workers & Pages and drag the folder in. Your address ends in pages.dev.

On Netlify

  1. Open a free account at app.netlify.com/signup and stay signed in. A site dropped without an account waits behind a temporary password until you claim it.
  2. Go to app.netlify.com/drop.
  3. Drag the whole folder you unzipped onto the page. The ZIP itself works too. A few files picked from inside it will not.
  4. Netlify shows your new address, ending in netlify.app. Open it: your site is live. For a nicer address, rename the project in its settings.

To update it later: open the project and drag the updated folder onto the area under Production deploys.

On Cloudflare Pages

  1. Open a free account at dash.cloudflare.com/sign-up.
  2. In the dashboard, open Workers & Pages (under Compute) and select Create application. At the bottom, select Continue to Pages, then Get started under Drag and drop your files.
  3. Name the project and select Create project. Drag the whole folder in, then select Deploy site.
  4. Your address ends in pages.dev. Open it: your site is live.

To update it later: open the project, select Create deployment, and drag the updated folder in.

Good to know

  • The whole folder goes up. Everything in the folder goes online with it, including the notes for your AI tool. None of them is private.
  • Big files. Netlify says uploads under 50 MB work best, and a single file over 10 MB can make an upload stall. Cloudflare Pages takes files up to 25 MiB each. Big videos are lighter on Vimeo or YouTube.
  • Free plans have a monthly limit. On Netlify's free plan, a site that passes its monthly usage limit is paused until the month resets. A portfolio of images rarely gets there; heavy videos usually are the reason, so put them on Vimeo or YouTube. On Cloudflare Pages, requests for static files are free and unlimited.
  • Netlify shows the project as private? Change its visibility to public in the project settings.
  • Moving to the other host later? It is the same folder. Put it on the new host, point your domain there, and close the old project.
  • Your site is also live with Promtfolio? Putting the folder on a host does not touch it. Switch ways or take it offline shows how to take that copy down.

Your own domain, and your email

A domain is the name people type, like yourname.com. It is optional: your site already works at its free address. Connecting one means copying a few lines from your host into the settings of the company you bought the name from.

Buy one, if you do not have one yet

Any domain company works. A domain is a yearly fee, and each company shows its current price on its own site.

Connect it on Netlify

  1. Open your project, then Domain management, then Add a domain, then Add a domain you already own.
  2. Point the name at Netlify. Netlify suggests switching your domain's nameservers to Netlify DNS, and shows the names to paste at your domain company. Or keep your company's settings and add only the records Netlify lists.
  3. Netlify turns on HTTPS by itself once the name points at it. Domain management, then HTTPS, shows the status.

Connect it on Cloudflare Pages

  1. Open your project, then Custom domains, then Set up a custom domain.
  2. Type your domain and follow the records Cloudflare shows. A name without www, like yourname.com, needs its nameservers moved to Cloudflare.

Keep your email working

Email at your domain keeps working as long as its MX records, the ones that point to your email, stay as they are. If you get email there, keep your domain company's settings and add only the records for the website. If you switch the domain's nameservers to your host instead, copy every record you have now to the new host first, the MX records above all.

How long it takes

The change reaches everyone usually a few hours, sometimes up to two days. Your free address keeps working meanwhile.

Moving from Adobe Portfolio on the same domain?

Keep the old site on until the new one loads on your domain. Once it does, the _redirects file in your folder sends anyone who opens an old project link to its new page. Netlify and Cloudflare Pages both read it.

Keep a copy

Keep the ZIP you downloaded. It is your untouched copy, whatever happens to the folder you work in.

Lost the folder? Open your site from My sites and download it again, as often as you need.

A new download is your site as Promtfolio has it. The changes you made with your AI tool live only in your own folder, so that folder is the copy that counts. Copy it to a cloud drive or an external disk now and then.

Starting from zero

Never worked with Claude Code or Codex before? Do these first, then go back to the three steps. There is no code to write at any of them.

Install the app

Download the Claude desktop app from claude.com/download and run the installer. Open Claude from the Start menu, then sign in or create an account.

Open Claude from your Applications folder, then sign in or create an account.

That is the whole install. The app includes Claude Code, so there is nothing else to set up.

Using Codex instead? Codex is part of the ChatGPT desktop app, which OpenAI offers for Windows, Mac and Linux. Open the ChatGPT quickstart, select Download ChatGPT, and choose the version for your computer. Choose a plan

Claude Code needs a paid plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. The free plan does not include it.

Pro is the one to start with, and it includes Claude Code. The current prices are on Claude's pricing page.

Pro has a usage limit per session and per week. When you reach one, you wait for it to reset. Max gives you more room.

If the Code tab asks you to upgrade, you are still on the free plan.

Using Codex instead? OpenAI includes Codex in every ChatGPT plan, the free one too. Plus is the paid plan to start with, and the current prices are on OpenAI's pricing page.

Chat, Cowork or Code

The Claude app has three tabs at the top.

Chat
A conversation. It has no access to the files on your computer.
Cowork
Works on a task in the background while you do something else.
Code
Works directly in a folder on your computer. This is the one for your site.

Your site is a folder, so everything in this guide happens in Code.

Your project folder

Your AI tool works in one folder at a time. For your site, that is the folder you unzipped.

Each time you come back, open the same folder and carry on. Your files are exactly as you left them.

Starting something new one day? Make an empty folder in Documents, give it a name, and open that one.

Your site with Promtfolio

For a site on Go live with us: you change it and publish it in your studio, in the browser. Nothing to install, nothing to download.

Edit by hand

Your case studies 0:56

Open My sites and select Open in studio on your site. In the studio bar, turn on Edit on the page, then click any text or image to change it.

Projects, in the same bar, reorders, renames and hides your projects.

Editing by hand is free.

Change the look

Style changes the look, the colours, the fonts and the layout. Try as many as you like: it is free.

History, in the panel beside your site, keeps restore points for the look, so you can step back to an earlier one.

Change anything with AI

Change with AI takes a change in your own words, like "make the project titles larger" or "rewrite my about page in a warmer voice", and makes it. On a narrow screen it sits inside More.

A rewrite of your words shows the before and after first: Apply keeps it, Dismiss drops it. Other changes show on the page right away. After you apply a change, Undo under the message takes it back, and History steps the look back.

Change with AI uses credits. Editing by hand and Style never do.

Go live

Keep it fresh in your studio 1:01

Select Go live in the studio bar, choose your address, and select Go live at that address. One click, and your site is online.

After that, every change waits in the studio until you publish it. The same screen shows Publish my latest changes: select it, and the live site catches up.

Your own domain with Promtfolio

Go live at your Promtfolio address first. Then select Live in the studio bar (the Go live button turns into it once your site is online), open Use my own domain, type a domain you own and select Connect. The screen shows the records to copy, each with a Copy button. Paste them into the DNS settings at the company you bought the domain from.

The status changes on its own, from Checking to Connected to SSL ready, usually a few hours, sometimes up to two days. You can close the screen and come back, and your Promtfolio address keeps working meanwhile.

You only add records for the website, so email at your domain keeps working.

If the screen says connecting a domain isn't open yet, your Promtfolio address works today, and the screen gives you a way to reach us.

Switch ways, or take it offline

One payment covers both ways, and you can switch whenever you like. At the bottom of the Go live screen in the studio, select Switch to Take it with you or Switch to Go live with us. No new payment.

To take a site offline without deleting it, open My sites and select Take offline on its card. It stays in your account as a draft, its address stays held for it, and a domain connected to it is released, so you can point the domain at another host.

The sections on the Claude app (its tabs, skills, models, usage and modes) are hidden while Codex is chosen: none of them was checked for Codex. Everything on this page about your folder, your files and putting the site online is the same in both.

What a skill is

A skill is a set of instructions you save once and reuse: a file named SKILL.md. Claude picks a skill up when it is relevant, or you call it by typing / and its name.

Your folder came with seven of its own, in .claude/skills, taken from the Promtfolio plugin for Claude Code. next-step answers what's next, portfolio-strategy writes the brief that says who your portfolio is for, extract-case-study pulls a case study out of your files, screenshots or notes, extract-from-claude-history pulls one out of your past Claude conversations, build-portfolio-page turns it into a page in the style of your site, audit-existing-portfolio reviews the site you have, and publish-site puts it online, on Netlify or Cloudflare Pages. You never open them. They are what your AI tool follows when you talk.

It is worth making one of your own when you keep pasting the same instructions. For a portfolio, that could be your own checklist before you publish.

What an agent is

An agent is an AI that does the work instead of only answering: it reads your files, edits them and checks the result. Claude in the Code tab is one.

A subagent is a helper Claude sends off on a side task, like searching through many files. It works on its own and brings back a summary. Its work counts toward the same usage limits.

AGENTS.md in your folder is not an agent. It is the note that tells an AI tool how your site is built. Codex reads it on its own, and Claude reads it through CLAUDE.md.

Models

A model is the engine that does the thinking. You pick it from the dropdown next to the send button, and you can change it during a session.

Start with the one that is already selected.

Depending on your plan, a model can be marked "Requires usage credits". That one is paid for on top of your plan. To stay inside your plan, choose a different one.

The usage ring

Next to the model picker there is a small ring. Select it to see two things: how full this session is, and how much of your plan you have used in this period.

Your plan's limits are shared by Chat and Code.

Settings, then Usage, shows when your weekly limit resets.

How much Claude asks you

The mode selector sits next to the send button. It decides how much Claude does before it checks with you.

Manual
Claude asks before it edits a file or runs a command.
Accept edits
Claude edits files without asking, so you move faster.
Plan
Claude proposes an approach and touches nothing.
Auto
Claude works on its own, and a background check blocks risky actions.

Questions

I am not technical at all. Is this for me?

Yes. You do not write code and you do not read it, at any step. You say what you want in plain words, look at the result, and say what to change. The three steps above are the whole setup, and what's next is the only thing you need to remember.

What does what's next do?

Your AI tool reads the folder, shows the way to a finished portfolio with your place on it marked, and offers one next step. Say yes, or say what you would rather do. It works on the first day and every time you come back, and nothing in it goes online on its own.

I double clicked index.html and the links to my projects do not open.

That is expected. A browser that reads files straight from your computer does not open a folder as a page. Ask your AI tool: "Start the local preview so I can look." It serves the folder the way a web host does, and every link works.

What if I stop paying for Claude or ChatGPT?

Your site keeps working exactly as it is. It is a folder of plain files that does not need an AI tool, or Promtfolio, to stay online. When you want to change it again, open the folder in Claude or Codex, on whichever plan you have then.

What happens to my site in five years?

It is plain HTML, CSS and images in a folder you own. There is nothing to build and nothing to keep updated, so it opens in a browser then the way it does today, on any web host.

Do I need to keep paying anyone to keep my portfolio online?

No. Hosting costs $0, and the only yearly cost there can be is a domain of your own, which is optional. Netlify and Cloudflare Pages each have a free plan, and a portfolio is a small site.

What if Promtfolio disappears?

You lose nothing. The folder on your computer is the whole site, and it runs on any host without us. Keep the ZIP you downloaded as your untouched copy.

What if I want a completely different look next year?

It is your folder, so nothing locks you in. The colours and fonts are a short list at the top of one file, style.css. Ask your AI tool for the change, or hand the folder to a developer.

Is my work private?

The folder lives on your computer. When you open it in Claude or Codex, that tool reads the files in it, under your own account with that company. Once you put the site online, it is public. Everything in the folder goes online with it, including the notes for your AI tool. None of them is private. None of them holds a password.

Can I delete my site, or my whole account, by myself?

Yes, both, from My sites at promtfolio.com/dashboard. Each site card can take the site offline without deleting it, or delete it for good: you type its address, or its name when it has none, to confirm, and its files, its saved versions and its published address are removed, and a domain connected to it is released. Your account and your credits stay. At the bottom of the same page you can delete the account itself: you type DELETE to confirm, and every site in it, their version history, your profile and your sign in are removed. Neither can be undone, and a folder you downloaded stays on your computer either way.

How does having my own website work? Do I buy my own domain?

A site of your own has three parts: the files (your pages and images), a host that serves them, and a domain that points to the host. You buy the domain from a registrar for a yearly fee, put the files on a host, which can be free, and connect the two in the domain's DNS settings. On Netlify, putting the files online means dragging the folder onto a page. If your work is already on Adobe Portfolio, Promtfolio makes the files from it, and then you choose: Take it with you, where you host the files yourself, or Go live with us, where Promtfolio hosts them.

How do I host my own portfolio website?

Put the folder of files on a static host, then point your domain at it. With Netlify Drop you drag the folder onto app.netlify.com/drop and get a live address ending in netlify.app; Netlify advises keeping an upload under 50 MB. Cloudflare Pages takes the same folder from its dashboard, with each file up to 25 MiB. After buying a site from Promtfolio you can also skip this step with Go live with us.

Can I host my portfolio website on GitHub?

Yes. GitHub Pages hosts static sites made of HTML, CSS and JavaScript files, on a github.io address or on your own domain. A published site can be up to 1 GB, with a soft limit of 100 GB of traffic a month, and GitHub says the service is not meant for running an online business. A site downloaded from Promtfolio is plain files, so it runs there; the redirect file in the download is read by Netlify and Cloudflare Pages, not by GitHub Pages.

How do I move my portfolio to a new host without messing up my email?

Email at your domain keeps working as long as its MX records, the ones that point to your email, stay as they are. If you get email there, keep your domain company's settings and add only the records for the website. If you switch the domain's nameservers to your host instead, copy every record you have now to the new host first, the MX records above all. Adobe's help center gives the same rule for a domain connected to Adobe Portfolio: keep the MX record pointed at your email host. Before you edit anything, save a copy of your current DNS records, so you can put one back.

Is a 301 redirect from my old portfolio addresses possible?

Yes, on a domain you own, not on a myportfolio.com address. A redirect has to come from whoever serves the address, so it works on a domain you own and not on a myportfolio.com address, which Adobe says does not forward. Once your own domain points at a new host, that host can do it: Netlify and Cloudflare Pages both read a plain text file named _redirects, one line per old address. A site downloaded from Promtfolio includes that file, already filled in with your old project addresses as 301 redirects.

Can I use Claude Code without knowing how to code?

Yes. You say what you want in plain words, Claude Code changes the files, and you look at the result and say what to change next. The Claude desktop app has a Code tab where you pick the folder of your site and talk to it there. If you have not used Claude Code or Codex before, expect some setup before your first change: installing the app and signing in. That is setup, not code. The Start Here file in your download and the Learning Center take you through it step by step. If you already work with one of them, open the folder and start.

Can Claude build me a portfolio website?

Yes. Claude Code works inside a folder on your computer: it reads the files, changes them when you ask in plain words, and shows you the result. If your portfolio already exists on Adobe Portfolio, a static site, or WordPress with a page per project, Promtfolio rebuilds it from the link, and once the site is yours you download it as a folder set up for Claude Code or Codex, so the work starts from your own projects and not from an empty folder.

Can I use Claude Code without a subscription?

Not on the free plan. Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code as part of its paid plans, Pro and up, and not of the free one; the current prices are on that page. The site you download from Promtfolio does not depend on the plan: it is a folder of plain files that stays online whether or not you keep paying for Claude. If you would rather not pay for Claude, OpenAI lists Codex as included in ChatGPT plans, the free one too, and the same folder is set up for it.
